IT informa aligns customs compliance requirements across 15 business units for major international retailer

Building a new customs compliance solution for a global retailer’s import and export operations is not primarily a technology challenge. It is a coordination challenge: getting more than 15 business units to agree on what the solution needs to do, in enough detail to build it.

IT informa’s Tulika Choudhury has worked as Business Analyst at a major international retailer since January 2022, translating a programme-level business case for a new import/export customs solution into concrete, aligned requirements. The programme spans more than 15 business units, requiring sustained stakeholder engagement and a clear structure for managing competing priorities across a large and varied group.

The work has included leading requirement gathering and analysis, supporting fit-gap analysis with the SAP Global Trade Services platform, and mapping more than 20 complex workflows covering 80 systems and 500 end users using BPMN standards. The mapping identified both process improvements in user ways of working and system enhancements, and informed backlog management and strategic planning across the programme’s cross-functional development streams.

The requirements and fit-gap work contributed to a 20% reduction in cycle time across the programme.
